1. Can you tell us more about your creative journey and how your studio came to be?

“I came to jewelry by way of sculpture. I had a basic understanding of metalsmithing and benchwork from a college class, but I didn't come back to jewelry fully until after I'd developed a studio practice carving marble. I really love working directly with material, creating and building things with my hands, so jewelry was a natural extension of that practice. It's more accessible than stone carving, but I view my jewelry as a really intimate form of sculpture.”

2. What is a piece that has a special meaning to you? 

“The Alba Coral Ring in 18kt Gold with White Diamonds. I love working with coral, I think it's such a beautiful and incredibly natural material, and whenever I can I source vintage pieces of coral to work with. The Alba Ring features an "Angel-Skin" pastel-pink coral accented by two white diamonds. It's a nod to my love of the ocean, and feels like wearing an ancient artifact that's encased in gold.”

3. What are some of the best lessons you have learned since working with jewelry? 

“Making jewelry is a real joy and an honor. It's incredibly special to make custom pieces that celebrate engagements, new families, loved ones, and special moments. I love being involved in this intimate way with others. It's very important for me to work at a scale where I can still make every piece by hand. I work with a local stone-setter and appreciate that my work supports another small business. I've learned that my values around how I want to exist in the world must be reflected in my work and in my practice.” https://studiomari.co/
